ARTS & HUMANITIES
WE ARE THE ANSWER
"Perhaps the mission of an artist is to interpret beauty to people - the beauty within themselves."
― Langston Hughes
The Arts & Humanities comprises areas such as theatre, music, philosophy, history, visual arts and more. These subjects have been shown to have a positive effect on learning outcomes, as well as the development of soft skills and creative thinking-- essential for being the change we want to see in the world. Gateway Regional Council believes in the power of the arts & humanities for community development and wants to foster the growth of changemakers in these areas. PUBLIC HEALTH
WE ARE THE CHANGE
"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
― Gandhi
Health disparities arise when racial/ethnic minorities and people of lower socioeconomic status face challenges in getting the healthcare they need. Whether it’s based on the availability of such resources in their geographical location or the quality of care they receive, this is detrimental to the health outcomes of these groups. Gateway Regional Council believes in making healthcare and public health information accessible to everyone. Stay informed about public health topics such as Covid-19, environmental health, mental health, nutrition and more. Be the answer to providing Public Health resources, or see our list of resources!
SOCIAL JUSTICE
WE HAVE THE POWER
“We could choose to be a nation that extends care, compassion, and concern to those who are locked up and locked out or headed for prison before they are old enough to vote. We could seek for them the same opportunities we seek for our own children; we could treat them like one of “us.” We could do that. Or we can choose to be a nation that shames and blames its most vulnerable, affixes badges of dishonor upon them at young ages, and then relegates them to a permanent second-class status for life. That is the path we have chosen, and it leads to a familiar place.”
― Michelle Alexander, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness
Equality around rights, opportunities and treatment. The core of what Gateway Regional Council believes in-- equal housing, healthcare, and employment for every race, gender and age group. We want to see the elimination of discrimination and be apart of the change to ensure this is possible. We want to create and spread the word about opportunities for marginalized groups and highlight changemakers in these areas. WE ARE POWERFUL BEYOND MEASURE
"Being unhoused in America must no longer be viewed as an individual shortcoming, but rather as an unacceptable, life-threatening policy failure."
― Cori Bush

HOUSING
Safe and sanitary housing is a bare necessity, however, more than 500,000 people are experiencing homelessness in America. Gateway Regional Council believes that we can create positive change in this area by working with leaders fighting the housing crisis and highlighting resources designed to help those struggling with homelessness. EQUITY & ECONOMICS
WE CAN FIX IT
“Our tax laws were designed with White Americans in mind,” she writes. “That’s why no solution proposed by either the right or left — not better jobs, not increased homeownership, and not more access to higher education — will be effective without significant and fundamental tax reform.”
― Dr. Dorothy Brown, The Whiteness of Wealth: How the Tax System Impoverishes Black Americans--and How We Can Fix It
There is a cost for systemic racism and sexism. The marginalization of certain racial, ethnic and gender groups has led to economic disparities. Minority groups face wage gaps, which leads to inequalities in housing conditions and environmental health. This also leads to healthcare and education inequalities. Thus disparities in healthcare creates a ripple effect of undesirable outcomes. Gateway Regional Council believes that we can create change in this area by working with those championing economic equality causes and providing you with the necessary information. WE HOLD THE KNOWLEDGE
"Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose."
― Zora Neale Hurston
RESEARCH & INNOVATION
Gateway Regional Council believes that we can create the change we want to see in the world by conducting the appropriate research and implementing necessary change. There is so much we have to learn, whether in the sciences, arts & humanities, or social sectors. We hope to work with those already publishing research in these areas, as well as take part in research of our own, in order to provide you with more information and create the change we want to see in the world.
